When you become the reluctant star of the show!

This only affects you if you have ever looked at pornographic images on your computer so obviously, the vast majority of people have no need to heed the following warning.

Just when you though you knew all of the cyber traps laid for you, along comes a new one.

A new form of “malware” has been developed that can detect if you are watching pornography on your computer and if you are, it can switch on your camera and take snapshots of you.

It then forwards those snapshots to cyber criminals who will then contact you and attempt to blackmail you.

This “malware” is known as “Stealerium” and is spread in the usual manner, i.e. Phishing, whereby you are sent an email with an attachment or a link and are encouraged to open the attachment or follow the link. Typically, these emails appear to be from legitimate organisations including banks and government bodies.

Stealerium isn’t just limited to sourcing material for blackmail, it also sources other sensitive information on your PC, e.g. passwords, credit card information, etc.

Are you doing enough to educate your family and staff as to the dangers of opening email attachments?

Speak to our team at Xcede who can offer advice on avoiding these cyber traps.
