Cybeer attack on Belgium brewery

Clearly nothing is sacred when it comes to ransomware attacks, the brewers of the ridiculously strong “Duvel” beer (alcohol content 8.5%) being recent victims.

The attack meant the closure of five breweries: Four in Belgium and one in the U.S.A. The brewery claims that swift action from their IT department mitigated the impact of the attack and whether a ransom was paid or not remains a secret.

The brewery seems to be fairly pleased with the speed with which their I.T. department was informed of the attack by their automated systems and were able to shutdown their servers. Whether they were quick enough, remains to be seen. They have not made any announcement about whether a ransom was demanded and if so, how much, nor have they admitted or denied paying the attackers.

Whilst it is unlikely we will ever found out exactly how the attackers were able to gain entry to their systems, such attacks are not just limited to large companies like the Duvel Moortgat Brewery and with the recent expansion in the use of Artificial Intelligence, attacks are being automated and can impact any computer user connected to the Internet, including small businesses in the U.K.
