Forget your 15 year old, what is your 13 year old up to???

A 25 year old Finnish hacker has recently been jailed for less than 7 years for committing over 30,000 cyber-related crimes.

He rose to prominence in the hacking world at the age of 13 and was arrested in 2014 at the age of 17. He was subsequently found guilty of over 50,000 hacking offences but was released with a 2 year suspended prison sentence, much to the disappointment of cyber security experts.

His most recent cyber attack is a little different from others in that the data was stolen from a psychotherapy centre who, when requested to pay a ransom, refused so the hackers started contacting the individuals whose data has been compromised, demanding €200 (£170) or their data would be published.

The data included extremely sensitive information that patients had shared, in confidence, with their therapists. Whilst some people actually paid the ransom, they hadn’t realised that their information has already been leaked on-line.

The targets for cyber attacks are not just large corporations, or even small businesses. They can be individuals like you or me. This case also shows that even if you are extremely careful with your own IT security and that of your business, it just takes one company holding your information that is insecure and you or your business pay the price.
